Getting straighter teeth no longer has to involve chunky metal brackets and sharp wires that irritate the inside of your mouth and look unattractive. Invisalign, available at Luz Hernandez, DDS, is a modern teeth-straightening system that uses a series of transparent plastic aligners you wear over your teeth.
When you start your Invisalign treatment, Dr. Hernandez uses a digital intraoral scanner to create a 3D image of your teeth. She manipulates the image to predict the way your teeth will move during the treatment. Then, she sends the images to the Invisalign lab, where your aligners are designed and manufactured.
While you undergo treatment with Invisalign, you must wear your aligners 20-22 hours of the day. You can take your aligners out for every meal and for special events where you’d rather not wear them, but you should brush your teeth and clean your aligners each time you eat.
Dr. Hernandez advises you to progress to the next aligner in your system every 1-2 weeks. Each new aligner shifts your teeth slightly toward alignment.
You’ll need to come in for appointments with Dr. Hernandez throughout your treatment, about once every 4-6 weeks. She examines your teeth to make sure you’re keeping up with your treatment.
The Invisalign system is designed to treat mild to moderate cases of misalignment. Dr. Hernandez might recommend that you use Invisalign if you have:
You can use Invisalign on the top, bottom, or both rows of your teeth.
If you’re given the choice between Invisalign and traditional braces, Invisalign has a few advantages you should consider. Patients like using Invisalign to align their teeth because:
It also allows you to have professional check-ups with your dentist every step of the way and as often as needed. Dr. Hernandez ensures that if any undesired tooth movement takes place, it is corrected on your regular check-ups so as to prevent any undesired treatment outcome.
After looking over your teeth and discussing your options, Dr. Hernandez can tell you whether you’re a candidate for Invisalign.
Over-the-counter aligners have become popular, but unfortunately, the end result is almost always worse than how the patients’ teeth started. Dr. Hernandez must then start all over again to correct the additional problems.
